The opportunity
The Medical Head for the USA and Innovative Medicines is a key leadership role within Global Medical Affairs, responsible for overseeing medical affairs ensuring strategic, operational, and functional alignment across the United States. This individual will be a core member of the Global Medical Affairs Leadership Team (GMALT) and the US Commercial innovative Leadership team. This role requires a vision with a deep understanding of the healthcare landscape, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive medical strategies and innovation. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in medical affairs, clinical development, and a proven track record of successful leadership in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
This role will drive excellence in execution by integrating global medical priorities with regional and local implementation. The Medical Head will lead cross-functional collaborations to advance the medical strategy, optimize engagement with external stakeholders, and support innovation across the medical organization.
With a focus on Innovative Medicines, the ideal candidate will have, strong leadership, a deep understanding of medical affairs, clinical development in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, and the ability to drive alignment across a complex, matrixed organization.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement the US medical strategy in alignment with global medical objectives.
- Provide strategic oversight and leadership to ensure Regional and Country Medical Affairs teams align with Global Medical Affairs (GMA) priorities.
- Develop and drive an integrated global medical strategy for Innovative Medicines, ensuring consistency and alignment across geographies.
- Partner with R&D, Commercial, Market Access, and Corporate Affairs to ensure medical affairs priorities are embedded into cross-functional initiatives.
- Lead global medical initiatives that support product launches, lifecycle management, and external engagement.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement in medical practices and processes.
Medical Affairs:
- Oversee the development and execution of US integrated evidence and medical plans, including medical education, publications, and scientific communications.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards in all medical activities.
- Foster strong relationships with key external leaders, healthcare professionals, and patient advocacy groups.
- Lead the alignment of medical communications, real-world evidence (RWE) generation, and medical education efforts across geographies.
Operational Excellence & Execution:
- Provide oversight and direction for clinical trials and research activities within the US.
- Ensure best-in-class execution of medical strategies within the US by implementing global standards, frameworks, and processes.
- Optimize collaboration between Regional and Country Medical Affairs teams, ensuring seamless execution of strategic objectives.
- Define key performance metrics and ensure accountability for medical affairs activities across geographies
- Partner with medical operations to enhance governance frameworks and decision-making processes.
Scientific & External Engagement Leadership:
- Oversee external engagement strategies to strengthen scientific credibility and enhance interactions with healthcare professionals, regulators, and patient advocacy groups.
- Represent the company in key global scientific and medical forums, ensuring a strong and consistent presence.
Innovation & Medical Advancement:
- Drive a culture of medical innovation, ensuring that emerging scientific trends and digital health technologies are incorporated into medical affairs strategies.
- Champion novel approaches to medical engagement, including digital platforms and data-driven insights to optimize impact.
- Foster collaboration with academia, research institutions, and external partners to stay at the forefront of medical and scientific advancements.
People Leadership & Organizational Development:
- Build and lead a high-performing medical team, providing mentorship and professional development opportunities.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to Regional and Country Medical Affairs teams.
- Foster a culture of excellence, diversity, inclusion, and collaboration across the global medical community.
- Ensure strong talent development and succession planning to build a high-performing global medical affairs organization.
Governance, Compliance & Ethical Standards:
- Ensure adherence to global medical governance, compliance, and ethical standards across all regions and countries.
- Strengthen medical affairs decision-making frameworks to enhance efficiency and impact.
- Collaborate with legal and regulatory teams to ensure all medical activities comply with internal and external standards.
Your experience and qualifications
Education:
- Advanced degree (MD, DO, PhD, or PharmD) in a scientific or medical discipline required.
- Advanced degree in business or healthcare management is a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in medical affairs within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
- Proven experience leading global or regional medical affairs teams in a complex, matrixed environment.
- Strong track record in developing and executing global medical strategies that drive scientific and business impact.
- Experience in managing clinical trials and regulatory submissions.
- Experience in leading and developing high performing, diverse and inclusive team across multiple geographies

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- In-depth knowledge of the US healthcare system, regulatory environment, and industry trends.
