Job Description

Purpose

Serves as a key strategic partner to the SVP and the senior SR&D leadership team, participating in the development of tactical and strategic plans to meet department goals, supporting the SVP in interactions and initiatives within the Department and with other departments, helping to promote a culture of communication and collaboration within the Department and with other departments, and contributing to efforts that demonstrate the impact and value of SR&D to other functions and departments. The Chief of Staff is responsible for leading strategic initiatives and special projects that involve multiple divisions of the Department and/or require immediate response. The SVP may delegate other duties as required to the Chief of Staff.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assists the SVP by gaining knowledge of day-to-day SR&D intra-and inter-department activities, ensuring decisions are implemented, and advocating on behalf of the SVP
  • Looks for opportunities to establish relationships, lines of communication, and collaboration within the Department and with other departments/functions
  • Works together with the SVP and leadership team to plan meaningful, relevant, and strategic discussions at leadership team and town hall meetings; and ensures that meeting summaries are developed and action items are implemented
  • Teams with Department leadership to develop and prioritize department plans to achieve SR&D’s vision and strategy, addresses issues and obstacles that impede progress toward achieving goals.
  • Directs the allocation of department resources, including input into the preparation of the department budget (AOP), to achieve goals and objectives; provides leadership and direction to various program scopes, schedules and budgets; makes recommendations and forecasts for future funds needed for staffing; reviews and approves department expenditures and implements changes as appropriate; adjusts plans and programs to address new and emerging programs, policies, and expectations.
  • Partners with the SVP in preparing reports and/or presentations 
  • Participates in outside associations, as needed, and advises the SVP and leadership team on key learnings and/or best practices from other companies or outside discussions that could positively impact SR&D.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and working knowledge in various therapeutic areas, clinical study design and execution, and drug development
  • Working knowledge of SR&D principles and practices
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively with other departments and outside vendors
  • Strong relationship building skills, able to influence internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, including presentation skills
  • Motivated and adaptable individual with the ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, improve efficiency and adjust to changing priorities
