The opportunity
This newly created role is a cornerstone of our European Innovative BD, Early Pipeline & Portfolio team. As a senior strategic leader, you will drive portfolio optimization by focusing on the lifecycle management and strategic direction of mature brands, ensuring sustained value and commercial performance across Europe. A key responsibility will be to develop and implement strategies that protect revenue, extend product lifecycles, and maximize brand positioning in competitive markets. While the role retains accountability for identifying and evaluating select external opportunities—including licensing, partnerships, and acquisitions—the primary emphasis is on managing mature brands and supporting divestment decisions to optimize portfolio value. This position demands high-level strategic insight, cross-functional leadership, and strong external engagement to deliver on both growth and value realization objectives.
How you’ll spend your day
**Mature Brands Management & Lifecycle Leadership**
- Oversee the lifecycle management of mature brands with annual revenues exceeding $0.5B, ensuring sustained value and commercial performance.
- Develop and implement strategies to limit revenue erosion, optimize brand positioning, and extend product lifecycle.
- Track and analyze business performance metrics for mature brands, proactively identifying risks and opportunities.
**Divestment Support**
- Support the strategic evaluation and execution of divestment opportunities for mature brands.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure smooth transition and value realization.
**Opportunity Identification & Market Screening**
- Lead proactive identification and qualification of innovative assets across Europe, focusing on high-impact, near- and mid-term opportunities.
- Maintain a pulse on emerging science, therapeutic trends, and competitive dynamics through deep engagement with biotech, academia, and venture networks.
- Build and maintain a strong network of external contacts including biotech executives, venture capitalists, academic institutions, and industry experts.
**Evaluation & Due Diligence**
- Oversee and drive cross-functional due diligence processes, ensuring rigorous assessment of scientific, regulatory, commercial, and financial dimensions.
- Develop and present compelling investment cases and risk-adjusted forecasts to senior leadership
- Deliver clear, data-driven recommendations to senior leadership.
**Portfolio Strategy & Integration**
- Ensure strategic alignment of external opportunities with EU portfolio priorities and corporate objectives.
- Partner with commercial and market access teams to shape go-to-market strategies, launch sequencing, and pricing/access frameworks.
- Provide strategic input into the divestment of mature brands, optimizing portfolio value and resource allocation.
**Thought Leadership & Stakeholder Influence**
- Act as a senior thought partner to the Head of EU BD and SVP Innovative EU, contributing to long-range planning and innovation strategy.
- Foster strong internal alignment across functions and geographies, ensuring seamless execution of BD initiatives.
- Contribute to capability building within the team
Your experience and qualifications
- Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, or related field; MBA or PhD strongly preferred.
- 6–8+ years of progressive experience in strategic consulting business development or BD within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
- Demonstrated success in leading complex evaluations and executing BD transactions.
- Deep understanding of the European pharmaceutical landscape, regulatory frameworks, and commercial models.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Fluent in English; proficiency in additional European languages is a plus.
