The Opportunity

The position is a key member of the Global Medical Affairs (GMA) and Pharmacovigilance (PV) Leadership Team and the Europe Leadership Team.  The position-holder will be responsible for providing Medical leadership, support and governance of all Medical activities in the Europe Region across all Teva businesses. They will also oversee effective cross-functional and cross-regional alignment to achieve the business objectives of the region and ensure that patients in Europe are our primary consideration in everything we do.

Business Impact:

Directs a large, matrixed organization of cluster/country Medical Directors, IM Therapeutic Area (TA) Medical Directors and Europe Medical Operations.  Assures a single Medical voice and strategy for the Region and leads the development and execution of integrated functional activities that drive the success of global plans. The incumbent will engage with external experts within the Region and provide leadership and guidance in resolving Medical-related issues.  As a member of the GMA and PV Leadership Team, they will help shape the overall strategy and impact of the Medical organization in support of Teva’s business priorities.

The position reports directly to the SVP, Global Head of GMA and PV, and is a member of the GMA and PV Leadership Team (GMAP LT), participating in defining and achieving the long and short-term goals of the GMA and PV organization. 

The position reports dotted line to the EVP, Europe, and leads and oversees the creation and execution of the regional Medical strategy and plans, including the design and the execution of regionally sponsored studies as well as oversight and management of investigator sponsored research.

Job Description

  • The position acts as the regional Medical partner for Teva’s generics portfolio and is responsible for ensuring the support and Medical governance of Teva’s Europe generics business. 
  • In collaboration with country and cluster General Managers, drives a people/resource plan for Region Medical Affairs to ensure long-term strategic preparation and short-term execution success.
  • Develops and manages a responsible long-term financial plan and annual budget for Region Medical Affairs by partnering with the Regional Commercial organization to make strategic resource decisions.   
  • Ensures that the MA function is operationalized according to the highest industry standards across the Europe Region and that all MA colleagues in the Europe Region are informed of and fully compliant with company Policies and SOPs.
  • Europe point of contact for the R&D organization, ensuring that the needs for Europe Registration and Access are reflected in the appropriate committees.
  • While the position is regional, the role is accountable for providing Medical governance across the countries in Europe and ensuring that each country Medical department in Europe is “fit for purpose”


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and articulates a Regional Medical strategy, aligned to the Global Medical and Regional Commercial priorities, which shapes and differentiates products, communicates the science, and adds to the commercial value of products
  • As an active member of the Europe Regional Leadership team, ensures Medical opportunities and challenges become part of long-term strategic plans and annual operating plans.
  • Leads a matrixed medical affairs team, providing direction to ensure implementation of the Medical strategy, good Medical governance and effective medical/scientific work throughout the Region. Ensures that the MA function is operationalized according to the highest industry standards across the Europe Region and that all MA colleagues in the Europe Region are trained on and fully compliant with company Policies and SOPs.
  • Develops Region therapeutic area (TA) plans, aligned with Global TA plans, and drives the success of TA activities. 
  • Coaches, develops, and mentors employees in the Europe regional HQ Medical Team and those located in country Medical teams, evaluates the effectiveness of organization structures and processes, and plans and executes changes for greatest success – all in alignment with the Global Medical Affairs operating model and plans.  Grows the Region Medical capabilities and expertise for the future.  Critically, the position is accountable for the competency and development of people in the Europe Medical departments in the countries.


Experience Required:

  • 12+ years or more of pharmaceutical industry experience, including a minimum of 10 years of experience in Medical Affairs and experience of product launches.
  • Highly experienced in leading teams and working collaboratively with stakeholders.         
  • Substantial clinical or research experience in a therapeutic area of interest is desirable.


  • M.D. or similar medical qualification.                      

Differentiating experiences leading to success:

  • Broad Medical Affairs experience – multiple roles, functions and activities
  • Significant experience with launches of multiple specialty products
  • Experience working with generic pharmaceuticals
  • Clinical experience; performed as a medical doctor
  • Deep knowledge of drug development and R&D clinical development
  • Deep knowledge of the Europe market access environment
  • Experience in leading large teams that are multi-national, multi-disciplinary, and multi-language. Proven success working in multi-layered matrix organizations – global, regional, country, inter-country regions, cross functional teams
  • Proven success in influencing internal and external stakeholders from various disciplines and expertise

Functional Knowledge:

  • Understands the strategic importance and growing significance of Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Marketplace – Region opportunities, constraints, health authority situations, health economics and payer sectors
  • Medical launch, drug development, clinical trial design, life cycle initiatives, and regulatory knowledge.
  • Key therapeutic areas that are driving the Teva business strategy – expertise not necessary but must have an understanding and appreciation
